Establishing a merchant account for your business enterprise is the wisest financial decision you will ever make for the growth, expansion and success of your business. Once you’ve set up a merchant account, you can accept credit and debit cards payments from your clients for your products and / or services. You can also arrange to accept online and mobile banking payments for your products and / or services.

A merchant account opens up new avenues for your business; therefore, giving your business many more opportunities to flourish. But, have you ever understood how the credit card processing system works? Have you tried to perceive the complexities of the players involved in the process and the intricacies of the system?

While it is not entirely essential for you to know the inside and outside of the card processing system because your Merchant Service Provider will do the needful for you; it is good for you to acquaint yourself with the system on a general basis.

The Participants Involved in a Card Transaction

A typical credit or debit card transaction involves the following players:

    The customer
    The merchant
    The payment gateway
    The customer’s credit card issuer
    The credit card interchange
The processor at the acquiring bank
    The merchant’s acquiring bank

The Route the Money Takes from the Customer to the Merchant

Let’s take an example to understand how the card processing system works.

Suppose that a customer walks into a clothing store and she finds a bag that catches her eye. She immediately proceeds to the payment counter and makes a payment of $100 towards her purchase with her cards.

The cashier at the merchant’s store accepts the cards and uses a card swiping machine to set the process into motion.

The $100 amount makes its first stop at the payment gateway where the payment is first authorized with a minor deduction in the amount.

Now, $99 travels to the appropriate processor and after a minor deduction is submitted to the card interchange as $98.5.

Once the transaction gets a clear at the interchange, it moves on to the issuing bank with a further deduction where the issuing bank verifies the availability of funds in the customer’s credit / debit card.

If the transaction is declined, it makes its journey back to the customer from here.

If the transaction is approved, $98 reaches the processor at the acquiring bank, just one step closer to the merchant account.

Once authorized, $97.5 gets deposited into the merchant’s account, which is now at the merchant’s disposal.

(The figures and fees involved in card processing are based on the number of players in the process, merchant type, card type and risk factors)

In the present age, quite a number of payments are made electronically, especially with the extensive use of credit and debit cards and online funds transfer. Although typical card processing takes seven participants, the entire transaction amazing takes a maximum of five seconds for approval.

The amount of things one can do with a credit card or a debit card on a daily basis is incredible. The reason being is that mobile credit card machines have modified these simple objects into something that one can almost use anywhere and at no expense. The device ensures security and hassle free transactions and is a favoured point of sale for many businesses.

How these machines have shaped the use of money

Prior to the existence of these machines, there was only so much you could do with a credit card or a debit card. One would have to draw money from the bank and then use it to pay for a meal at a restaurant or a ticket to watch a movie. Since the inception of credit card machines, the old school routine of constantly drawing money from the bank has been removed. Instead, one can simply go directly to a point of purchase and make a transaction without being anywhere near a bank.

The advantages of using credit machines

The biggest advantage of using these machines is security for both the customer and the business. By using a credit card machine, one is transferring data to a service provider that authorises the payment and then sends it to the businesses account with no chance of fraud or miscalculation involved. Since the payments are done using telephonic technology, businesses are less prone to being robbed or attacked for money as it will be intangible and already in an account.

The design and usability of a credit card machine is also advantageous. The machine is not large and can easily fit in one’s hand, allowing it be used anywhere whether you’re sitting at a restaurant table or standing in a queue. The credit card machine is also easy to use and can transfer funds from ones account to another almost instantly. The machine is much like that of an ATM. Simply enter your code and confirm the purchase you wish to make. It’s more simple and efficient as opposed to scrounging around your purse trying to find a couple of coins.

These marvelous machines have proven to be a valuable point of sale for both businesses and customers. They provide security, efficiency and so much more that greatly improve transaction methods. It also encourages the use of credit or debit cards, reducing the customer’s dependency on physical money.

Perhaps you’re participating in a trade show where you’d like to accept credit cards, or maybe you’re running a promotion at your business. If you normally only accept cash and checks, it might be best to rent a credit Card Embossing Machine for special occasions rather than buying one that you may never need again.
    Difficulty: ModerateInstructions
Step 1Determine whether you would like to rent a credit Card Embosser on a long-term or short-term basis. The difference in price will be significant, and many rental companies specialize in one or the other.
Step 2Decide whether you should obtain a merchant account separately or let a rental company set one up for you. The biggest factor here is price, and it is sometimes cheaper to obtain a merchant account — which allows you to accept credit cards as payment — from a third party rather than paying for it at the rental company.
Step 3Research places in your community where you can rent a credit Card Embossing Machine – Card tipper. It is often best to handle this rental locally so you can be assured great service rather than ordering a machine online or over the phone. However, make sure you research rates for both types of rentals.
Step 4Determine what type of equipment you will need. Some rental companies will provide you with a terminal that accepts all credit and debit cards, including those that require a PIN. Others will have a more limited selection, so you must decide in advance what you’re willing to sacrifice for cost.
Step 5Ask for quotes on exact rates and fees that you will be charged when you rent a credit Card Embossing Machine. This will include a daily, weekly or monthly flat rate, in addition to a per-transaction charge that can vary widely depending on what company you choose. Some rental companies will guarantee an equal or lower rate than others, so make sure to do your homework.
Step 6Verify that you can rent a credit Card Embossing Machine for a limited time, and that the machine will be delivered when you order it. Late deliveries mean lost profits, and you don’t want to sign a long-term contract when you don’t need one.
Step 7Consider renting a credit Card Embossing Machine that takes gift cards if you plan to give them out. Such equipment may cost more, but it will allow you to process a greater variety of transactions with more accuracy. In many cases, this is easier than passing out gift certificates.
Step 8Request a wireless credit Card Embossing Machine specifically if this is what you think you will need. A wireless machine will process credit and debit card transactions without being connected to a computer. This is particularly handy if you are running a trade show or other off-site promotion for your business.

Many banks offer optional credit card insurance, also known as credit card protection plans or balance protection plans. These plans offer debt protection in the event of the cardholder being unable to settle the outstanding balance. This may be as a result of death, disability or critical illness, or retrenchment.

Credit card protection plans are affordable and simple to secure, and as a credit card holder, its worth exploring this type of insurance to determine whether its worth having.

Learn more about balance protection plans below, or, if youre not yet a cardholder, explore the range of credit card options available to you.

    How balance protection plans work
Just like any other type of insurance, credit card insurance covers the policyholder in the event of the unforeseen. Every time you use your credit card, youre accumulating debt. If something were to happen to you that made it impossible for you to cover that debt, how would the bank recover its money? Thats where a balance protection plan comes in.

If you have a balance protection plan in place, your credit card debt will be covered up to a set limit in some cases, as much as R150,000 per account. This amount varies from lender to lender, and may also depend upon the type of credit card you have. During a very difficult time, the burden of paying your credit card balance will be lifted from your or your familys shoulders.

How credit card protection plans pay out
Credit card protection plans insure your outstanding balance against death, disability, critical illness and retrenchment. In the case of death, a lump sum is usually paid out to cover the outstanding amount, up until the limit set by your lender again, R150,000 for example. The same applies for critical illness. If a cardholder is diagnosed with a critical disease (as defined by his or her credit card protection policy), the outstanding balance will be settled, up until the maximum amount specified by the policy.

In the event of disability, which renders the cardholder unable to earn a regular income for more than 30 days, the policy will generally pay out in instalments over a period of time for example, equal monthly instalments over 6 months. If the cardholder is retrenched, the policy will also usually pay out in monthly instalments. In the latter instance, these instalments will not generally cover the entire outstanding balance, but a portion thereof.

The specific amount of insurance provided by your policy will depend on your insurers terms. Be sure to discuss these terms with your insurer or lender.

Applying for a credit card protection plan
When you apply for a credit card, you may be asked whether youd like to take out a balance protection policy. If not, broach the subject with your lender. You can also apply for credit card protection plans online or at a bank branch.

When traveling abroad, using a credit card can get costly. With the exception of one credit card Company, credit card companies charge a 3% international credit card transaction fee for all purchases made outside the United States. This 3% fee is generally hidden in the fine print of your credit card terms, but unless youre carrying a no transaction fee credit card, youll be paying extra for every purchase you make.

One way to avoid paying international credit card fees is to use your debit card. Although rules and fees vary from bank to bank, many national banks only charge a foreign currency conversion charge when you make a transaction. Unfortunately, there are a number of very major drawbacks to using your debit card to make purchases abroad. First, if someone steals your debit card info, your bank account may depleted before you realize it. This can lead to overdraft charges and other issues. Secondly, if your debit card is stolen, the funds that should be available to you in your bank may not be available for a substantial amount of time as the bank investigates your claims.

Clearly, this scenario could prove a nightmare. Imagine being stuck abroad with no available cash and returning home to spend weeks waiting for funds to return to your bank account.

Avoiding this scenario by using a credit card is must do. If your credit card is used fraudulently, you can contest the charges immediately and the money in your bank remains safe. Of course, paying a 3% fee for international credit card usage can cause a problem. However, simply apply for a credit card that charges no foreign transaction fees and you avoid excess fees and prevent all the issues that can arise when you use your debit card.

In addition to charging no international transaction fees, the same credit card company offers high limit credit cards. High limit credit cards offer consumers credit limits in excess of ten thousand dollars and, in many cases, up to twenty five thousand dollars.

Traveling abroad without a no foreign fee credit card can be more expensive and, in worst case situations, nightmarish. Using a debit card can obviously create some serious, time consuming and unnecessary financial headaches. Paying a 3% fee is generally worth avoiding the potential headaches, but since it is possible to avoid this fee, the best option is to apply for a credit card that doesnt charge a 3% international transaction fee.

While cash is not going away anytime soon, having a bit of plastic is all but necessary in today’s society. Banks are increasing the costs associated with debit cards and other accounts, so people are choosing to utilize credit cards for their transactions. Check out the suggestions provided below to pick up some great ideas for using credit cards more effectively.

If you have bad credit, try to get a secured card. Secured cards require you to pay a certain amount in advance to get the card. This means that you are borrowing from yourself and then paying interest to do so. It isn’t the best, but it can help to repair bad credit. When you are going to apply for one of these secured credit cards, make certain the company you choose is reputable. Down the road, you may even be able to switch to an unsecured (regular) credit card.rd.

We have all experienced it: You open your mail to find another credit card offer. You might be looking for a credit card, however, it is far more likely that you are not. Just remember to destroy the mail before you throw it in the garbage can. Treat it like the important document it is. This is because many solicitations include your personal information.

Resist the temptations that credit cards pose. It’s hard to resist this temptation while knowing you could get away with charging thousands of dollars worth of purchases. This can make you have trouble financially and that’s serious. Reduce impulse purchases by taking at least 48 hours to think over any large purchases before placing an order.

Limit the number of cards you apply for. Having many cards can make it difficult to keep your finances in check. You are also more likely to end up in debt because of the large amount of unsecured credit you have available to you.

Tell the credit card company if you’re planning to travel or make large purchases with your card. If you are traveling out of the country or buying something with a big price tag, it is a good idea to let your credit card company know ahead of time. This prevents the company from blocking transactions due to suspected identity theft.

You want to not only avoid late payment fees, but you also want to avoid the fees tied to going over the limit of your account. Both fees can be very pricey, both to your wallet and your credit report. Watch carefully and don’t go more than your credit limit.

Credit cards are growing as the electronic medium of choice for many individuals who prefer them over the increasing regulations and fees of debit cards. When you look at how big they have become, you will be able to gain benefits from credit cards and what they offer. Make use of credit cards in a responsible way by keeping this article’s advice in mind.

The offers to make money as you spend money are quite enticing to the modern consumer. With a cash back credit card, you can earn percentages that can reap rewards at the end of the year. So to choose the best cash back credit card for you, here are some questions that you will want to ask.

    1. What counts toward the cash back?

While it might seem that any purchase or addition to the overall cash back credit card balance would reap rewards, this is not generally the case. Many times, balance transfers and cash advances do not contribute to the percentage back. If you think that you will be using the cash back credit card for those purposes, youll want to see if you will be rewarded or not.

    2. How much cash back are you receiving?

Of course, if youre looking for a cash back credit card, youll want to choose the one with the highest amount of percentage that you can get back. And the cards vary widely in this respect. Look at several cash back credit card companies to see if one seems particularly high.

    3. Can you increase your cash back?

Besides increasing the overall balance and contributing to the cash back, some cash back credit card companies also encourage customers to frequent certain retailers to get a larger cash back amount. If you already go to these establishments, these cash back credit card companies might work out better for you.

    4. How can you redeem the cash back?

When youre using a cash back credit card, you want to be able to get your rewards as frequently as possible. There used to be a time when you had to wait until the end of a twelve month cycle to receive the benefits, but it has changed. Some companies are now allowing customers to redeem their cash back as payments against their balance or to contribute to a charity as frequently as certain amounts are accrued.

    5. What are the fees?

As with all credit cards, youll want to be sure that the cash back credit card you sign up for doesnt charge a large fee that actually upsets any rewards that you might be receiving. Try to find a cash back credit card that doesnt make you pay for your cash back.

With a cash back credit card, you can earn a little money as you spend for things that you already need.
